Jeremy Steig (1942–2016) was an American jazz flutist. His group, Jeremy and the Satyrs, spearheaded jazz rock music, which later became known as fusion. Many people may have first heard his flute playing in the instrumental section of the Beastie Boys' “Sure Shot” (1994), which samples Steig's “Howlin' for Judy" from his 1970 album LEGWORK.
His artistry was not limited to music. He drew the art for the covers of the LPs he made with major labels. Drawing was an indispensable part of Jeremy’s life, and the gallery in his memoir, GET ME OUT OF HERE offers a window into his unique sense of humor.
Though Jeremy Steig was hailed as a flute prodigy, few records existed of him recounting his turbulent life. His memoir, GET ME OUT OF HERE is packed with episodes that astonished even his longtime acquaintances. Furthermore, it offers a glimpse into the American music scene of the 1960s and 70s, and into his way of life as a jazz musician dedicated solely to the flute. Even young music fans unfamiliar with Jeremy Steig's music will surely find it enjoyable.
Now, ten years after his passing, this is a work I highly recommend revisiting. --Asako Steig
